FISHERMEN HARBOURD & OLD DOCK

Port de Pollença, s/n

OLD FISHERMEN'S DOCK WHERE THE FISHERMEN HARBOUR IS LOCATED, SURROUNDED BY THE "LLAÜTS"

Old fishermen's dock where the fishermen harbour is located, surrounded by the traditional fishing boats, the "llaüts". All this contrasts with the modern nautical club building.

The first fishermen shipping dock was built between 1826 and 1829, “so as to be able to ship the objects to the boats without the need for men to throw themselves into the sea”, as it is stated in the municipal record of 8th January 1825.

That is why the people from Pollença started to call, colloquially, that place as “eu Moll” (the Dock); even in the census of 1860 it is called “eu Moll”. In that time only the skipper Francesc Enseñat and nine more people, all of them from his family, lived there.

It will not be until the 5th January 1865 that the Central Government will give the so desired entitlement to the Port de Pollença as a fourth class customs. This would allow exporting goods, even to foreign countries, and to import in coastal trading rules, that is to say, national products. Because of this accomplishment there was to be a big celebration on the 11th June the same year.

Customs and the growth of the fishing activity will cause a first consolidation of the town; in 1900 there were nearly 100 residents already. With the new century, el Moll stood out like a residential place, first for the outstanding people in Pollença and in the island and, then, after the First World War, it became a pioneer town for the international tourism. Not in vain, in 1930 there were seven hotels opened, plus other inns or private houses rented to tourists.

Nowadays, Port de Pollença or "eu Moll", has around 7.000 inhabitants and it still maintains elements of its foundational time.
