PLAÇA MAJOR

Plaça Major

THE HEART OF POLLENÇA

Built in the nineteenth century to provide more open spaces for locals, this square hosts the parish church dedicated to the patron saint of Pollença and is the scene of traditional events.

This square was created between 1854 and 1857 to provide a new meeting point for Pollença locals, because a population spurt had made Plaça Vella (Old Square), the previous social hub of the town, too small.

Several improvements to the Plaça Major have been necessary over time, both to its paving and street furniture, but always in keeping with the original mid-nineteenth-century design. Its current appearance dates from the last of these improvements, which took place in 1999. Witness to all these changes in the square is the Church of Mare de Déu dels Angels, which was founded in the thirteenth century and is open to visitors.
